Conversation Questions for Language Practice

by | Oct 11, 2026 | Language Learning Tips & Resources

Sometimes the hardest part of speaking another language is knowing what to say next. You might have plenty of ideas but struggle to find the right words, think of a good question, or keep a conversation going.

This collection is here to help. It includes conversation questions, discussion topics, and useful expressions in English, Spanish, and French. You can use them during a language exchange, an online conversation meeting, or speaking practice with a friend.

You don’t need to memorize everything. Keep this page open, choose a question or phrase when you need one, and focus on communicating. The goal is to have a conversation, not to give a perfect answer.

How to Use This Conversation Practice Toolkit

Choose the section that matches what you need at the moment.

  • Need a question? Choose one from the conversation questions section.
  • Need a topic for the whole group? Pick a discussion topic and invite everyone to share their thoughts.
  • Not sure how to respond? Use one of the expressions for reacting, agreeing, disagreeing, or asking for more information.
  • Forgot a word? Try explaining what you mean instead of immediately switching languages.
  • Want more speaking practice? Answer a question aloud, then add a reason, an example, or a short story.

You can use the questions with a partner or in a group. Take turns answering, and give everyone time to speak.

The examples are written in a friendly, informal style. In Spanish, they generally use tú. In French, they generally use tu. If you’re speaking to someone in a formal situation, you may need to change the wording.

If you’re hosting a group and need activities to help people start talking, try these icebreaker activities for language classes and conversation groups.

Tips for Getting More Speaking Practice

You can use this list as often as you like, but the real benefit comes from using the language rather than just reading the phrases.

1. Give One Extra Detail

Try to add a reason, example, or personal experience to your answer.

Instead of saying:

“I like travelling.”

Try:

“I like travelling because I enjoy seeing how people live in different places.”

The extra detail gives the other person something to respond to.

2. Listen Before Choosing Your Next Question

You don’t need to ask a completely new question every time someone finishes speaking. Pay attention to what they said and ask about something that interests you.

If someone says they enjoy cooking, you could ask what they like to cook, how they learned, or which dish they would recommend.

3. Use a Phrase When You Need Time

You can say, “Let me think for a moment,” while you organize your thoughts. If you forget a word, describe it in another way.

These are useful communication skills, not signs that you’re failing at the language.

4. Practice a Few Expressions at a Time

Choose three phrases before your next meeting. Try to use them naturally during the conversation.

Once they become familiar, choose three more. You will get more value from using a few expressions comfortably than from trying to memorize the entire page.

5. Make Room for Everyone

In a group conversation, try to balance speaking and listening. Ask other people what they think, give them time to answer, and avoid turning the discussion into a series of rapid-fire questions.

6. Repeat Questions on Different Days

You can answer the same question today and revisit it a month later. You may find that you have more vocabulary, feel more confident, or see the topic differently.

Repeating a question also lets you practice expressing the same idea in a more natural way.

7. Focus on Communicating, Not Being Perfect

You can make mistakes and still have a meaningful conversation. The aim is to express your ideas, understand other people, and keep learning.

If you are attending a language exchange or online conversation meeting, keep this page nearby and use it whenever you need a little help.

The most useful question is often not the next question on this list. It is the one that follows naturally from what the other person has just said.

Keep practicing, one conversation at a time.
