Our Story

Every meaningful community begins with a simple idea.
Pep Talk Radio began in 2019 with one question:

What if learning a language wasn’t limited to textbooks, classrooms, or language-learning apps?

Languages were created to connect people. They help us share ideas, understand different cultures, build friendships, and discover perspectives we’d never encounter otherwise.

Yet millions of language learners spend months—or even years—studying grammar and vocabulary without ever feeling confident enough to have a real conversation.

We wanted to change that.

In July 2020, we hosted our very first online language event.

What started as a small experiment quickly grew into something much bigger.

By December 2020, an active community of language learners had formed around one simple belief: the best way to learn a language is by speaking it with real people.

By 2021, participants from around the world were joining our events, turning Pep Talk Radio into a truly international community where conversations crossed languages, cultures, and time zones.

Our early journey included hosting language conversation events for the Duolingo community. Over the years, we organized more than 1,500 language events across 10+ languages, welcoming 15,000+ language learners from 100+ countries.

The encouragement we received from the community was overwhelming, with participants giving our Duolingo-hosted events an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 from more than 4,000 reviews.

When Duolingo Classes was sunset in January 2023, our journey didn’t end.

It marked a new beginning.

Pep Talk Radio continued independently, creating free language exchange events and conversation spaces while welcoming thousands of new learners who shared the same passion for languages and meaningful human connection.

Today, our mission remains exactly as it was when we started. We believe language learning isn’t a race to perfection. It’s a lifelong journey built through curiosity, courage, patience, and conversation.
